Calls display a family member’s phone number — so your loved one always picks up

How the First Call Starts

Natural. Warm. Never robotic.

“Hey! I’m a friend of your daughter Annabelle — she got stuck at work and asked me to give you a ring just to check on you. How’s everything going?”
▼

After a few calls, it becomes natural —

“Hey, it’s Grace! How’s your week been?”

No awkward scripts. No survey questions. Just a warm conversation with someone who remembers them.

Why This Matters

Senior isolation is a public health crisis. CompanionCall is part of the solution.

The Science Behind a Daily Call

We didn't guess at this. A simple, warm phone call is one of the best-studied loneliness interventions there is — and we built CompanionCall the way the research says to.

Friendly calls measurably reduce loneliness, depression & anxiety

Randomized controlled trial, JAMA Psychiatry (2021) — the “Sunshine Calls” study

240 mostly homebound older adults received brief, empathetic phone calls most days for 4 weeks. Versus the control group:

  • Loneliness dropped significantly (1.1 points on the UCLA scale)
  • The share with depression symptoms fell from 59% to 44%
  • The share with anxiety symptoms fell from 50% to 36%

Loneliness shortens lives

Meta-analyses of 3.4 million people — Holt-Lunstad et al.

Across 70 studies, loneliness was associated with a 26% higher risk of early death, social isolation with 29%, and living alone with 32%. Earlier work by the same team found lacking social connection carries a mortality risk comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Isolation damages the body, not just the mood

National Academies of Sciences report (2020), cited by the CDC

Social isolation in older adults is associated with about a 50% higher risk of dementia, a 29% higher risk of heart disease, and a 32% higher risk of stroke — and nearly one in four adults 65+ is socially isolated.

How CompanionCall applies the research

  • Short and frequent beats long and rare. The Sunshine Calls were under ~10 minutes, most days of the week — and most participants chose the maximum of five calls a week when given the option. CompanionCall is a brief call every day.
  • Your loved one leads the conversation. In the trial, callers were trained to ask about topics the person raised — not to run scripts. Grace follows their lead: no checklists, no survey questions, one easy question at a time.
  • Empathetic listening, not interrogation. The measured benefits came from callers who prioritized listening. Grace listens, remembers what was said, and refers back to it.
  • The call never feels clinical. Grace never talks about monitoring or health checks on the call — the warmth is the intervention. The family report happens quietly afterward.
  • The family stays in the loop. After every call you get a plain-English summary — mood, highlights, and anything worth knowing — so isolation never goes unnoticed.

Give Your Loved One a Daily Friend

One phone call a day can change everything. Try it free — no commitment, no credit card. Enter a phone number, our companion Grace calls it right now, and the family report appears here when the call ends.
